Father’s Day 2023 is 18th June 2023. The day which started in the United States has continued to grow globally and in popularity each year. Many countries in the world celebrate Father’s Day with dads being recognised and celebrated by their children and spouses.
History of Father’s Day
Father’s Day was first celebrated in Washington State, USA in 1910. It was set up to complement Mother’s Day which was already a commercial holiday by 1908. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became a national holiday in the United States.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in 111 countries around the world, however, it’s celebrated on different days for different countries. For many countries in the West, like, the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Jamaica and France, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
In other countries, Father’s Day is celebrated earlier or later in the year. For example, in countries such as Kazakhstan and Honduras Father’s Day was on March 23rd and 19th February respectively.
On the other hand, in countries like Australia (3rd September), Fiji (3rd September), Finland (12th November), and Iceland (12th November) Father’s Day 2023 is going to be celebrated much later in the year.
Statistics on Father’s Day
Based on a 2022 survey in the USA, consumers had planned to spend US $20 billion on Father’s Day celebrations including US $3.8 billion on Father’s Day outings, US $3.11 billion on clothing, US $2.69 billion on gift cards and US $2.25 billion on electronics.
According to a 2021 YouGov poll, 55% of Americans had planned to celebrate Father’s Day while 53% said they would celebrate with their own father, 37% had plans to celebrate with their partner, and 29% with their children.
When it comes to gifts, fathers are more likely to request a card (28%), a special experience with their families (28%), clothing (17%), something homemade (16%), tools (16%) or electronics (14%).
